- Sandy Beach: Famous for its big shore-break waves, Sandy Beach is a popular spot for bodyboarding. On windy days, you can watch people fly kites.
- Halona Blowhole Lookout: A picturesque spot where you can watch the powerful blowhole spray water high into the air, especially during high tide. There is also a “secret” beach here that people like to go to. There are a lot of scenic spots along the roads on this side.
Starting East Toward Hawaii Kai
If you’re starting your drive around the island heading east, refer to this list but go backwards, starting from the last item on the list. The gentle waters make it an stress-free environment for parents, and it’s a great place to bring floaties for extra fun! This is our personal favorite spot when visit Oahu with kids.
With its stunning views of Diamond Head and the Honolulu skyline, Magic Island is also a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic while the kids play. The park is spacious, with plenty of grassy areas, shaded spots, and even a walking path along the shoreline.

Interactive Dolphin Experience: Dolphin Quest offers a variety of interactive programs designed for different age groups and comfort levels.
- Wee Family, Fins, and Fun (Ages 0-4): This package is perfect for the little ones, offering a dockside interaction with the dolphins while seated on a floating platform, so they can stay dry. (Our youngest tried this, with mom, but was a bit shy about touching the dolphin—though we got some great pictures!)
- For Ages 5 and Up: Longer programs, ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour, are available for older kids and adults. These sessions include in-water interactions in the shallow areas of the lagoon, as well as deeper water experiences where you can even see the dolphins underwater while floating at the surface. (Our 6-year-old, with dad, chose the 1-hour program, where they learned more about dolphins and got to swim and play with them in deeper water.)

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe is a serene and stunning destination, and it’s one of our top two things to do in Kaneohe with kids. This lush garden offers an incredible escape into nature, providing a peaceful setting where the whole family can relax and explore.
What to Expect:
- Scenic Beauty: The garden is filled with tropical plants, flowers, and trees from all over the world. The breathtaking views of the Ko’olau Mountains provide a perfect backdrop for your family adventure.
- Kid-Friendly Trails: There are several easy walking trails that wind through the garden, perfect for little legs to explore. The paths are well-maintained and offer plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, such as birds and butterflies.
- Picnic Areas: Bring a picnic and enjoy a meal surrounded by the beauty of nature. There are several designated picnic areas throughout the garden, making it a great spot for a family lunch.
- Lake and Wildlife Watching: Ho’omaluhia features a large, tranquil lake where kids can enjoy watching ducks and fish swimming around. Our kids especially loved spotting ducks, nene geese (Hawaiian geese), and looking for turtles—this was definitely their highlight of the garden.

- Bring Insect Repellent: The lush environment means there will be mosquitoes, especially on the Eastside of Oahu. We definitely recommend packing insect repellent and applying it when near lakes, waterfalls, or anywhere on the eastside, such as Kaneohe.
- Plan for Weather: Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is in a rainforest area, so be prepared for occasional rain showers. Bringing a light jacket or poncho is recommended.
- Take Your Time: The garden is expansive, so take your time strolling through the different sections. It’s a place to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty at a leisurely pace.

If your kids are cat lovers, a visit to one of Oahu’s cat cafes is a must! Our favorite spot is Cat Cafe MOFF, conveniently located at Ala Moana Shopping Center. This cozy café offers a unique and delightful experience where your family can enjoy some quality time with friendly felines while sipping on refreshing drinks.
What to Expect:
- Cat Cafe MOFF: Located in the bustling Ala Moana Shopping Center, Cat Cafe MOFF provides a calm and welcoming environment perfect for young kids. In addition to cats, MOFF also features other small animals, giving your little ones a fun and diverse experience with their favorite furry friends.
- Cat Interaction: The main attraction at MOFF is, of course, the cats! Your kids will love playing with and petting the friendly kitties. It’s a wonderful way to teach children about animal care and compassion in a safe and supervised setting.
- Feed the Cats: For an extra treat, you can even purchase snacks at the café to feed the cats. Your kids will love the chance to interact even more closely with their new furry friends.

- Teach Gentle Interaction: Before your visit, remind your kids about the importance of being gentle with the cats. This helps ensure a positive experience for both the children and the animals.
- Enjoy a Drink or Snack: While the kids are busy with the cats, you can sit back and enjoy a delicious tea, coffee, or snack. It’s a perfect break for parents too!
Visiting Cat Cafe MOFF at Ala Moana is a delightful experience for kids who love animals. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, combining relaxation, fun, and furry friends all in one convenient location.
12. Watching the Weekly Fireworks in Waikiki
Every Friday night, Waikiki lights up with a spectacular fireworks show that’s sure to delight both kids and adults alike. The show starts around 8 PM and is launched from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, making it a perfect way to end your day in paradise.
What to Expect:
- Spectacular Display: The fireworks are launched from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, offering a stunning display over the ocean. The colorful explosions light up the sky and reflect off the water, creating a magical experience.
- Best Viewing Spots: You can watch the fireworks from various locations along Waikiki Beach. The Hilton Hawaiian Village is the closest spot, but it can get crowded. For a more relaxed experience, consider watching from Magic Island or even from the Hilton Lagoon side, where it’s often less crowded. Or, if you’re lucky, you might even be able to enjoy the show right from your hotel room view!
- Arrive Early: To secure a good spot, especially if you’re near the Hilton Hawaiian Village, it’s a good idea to arrive early. Bring a blanket or beach chairs, and maybe even show up early for a dinner picnic, to make the most of the evening.
- Family-Friendly: The fireworks show is family-friendly and a perfect way to wrap up your day in Waikiki. Kids will love the bright lights and booming sounds, creating a memorable moment for everyone.

- Driving in from Outside Waikiki: If you’re not staying in Waikiki and need to drive in for the show, plan ahead. Public parking near the Hilton Lagoon fills up quickly—we found it full by the time we showed up at 7:30 PM. A good alternative is to park at the Ilikai Hotel, which is about a 5-minute walk away. In the past, we’ve also parked at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and had dinner at one of their restaurants before the show, which allows you to get parking validated.
- Parking Tips: Regardless of where you park, be prepared for packed parking lots when everyone is leaving after the show. It’s a good idea to take your time and enjoy the post-fireworks atmosphere rather than rushing to leave.
- Timing: The fireworks typically start around 8 PM, but it’s best to arrive earlier to find your spot and get settled in. The show lasts about 5 minutes, so you won’t want to miss a second of it!
- Pack Snacks: Make the evening even more enjoyable with kids by bringing some snacks or a picnic to enjoy while you wait for the show to start.

The Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) is a must-do experience when visiting Oahu. This immersive cultural center offers a full day of fun, learning, and entertainment, perfect for families looking to explore the rich culture and traditions of Polynesia.
What to Expect:
- Interactive Exhibits and Performances: The PCC is divided into different villages, each representing a unique Polynesian culture. Your family can engage in hands-on activities, watch traditional performances, and participate in interactive exhibits. It’s an excellent way to learn about the diverse cultures of Polynesia in an engaging and enjoyable way.
- Mini Shows: Throughout the day, the PCC hosts some of the best mini shows on the island. These shows are both educational and entertaining. Our personal favorite is the one where a performer climbs a coconut tree and demonstrates how to use a coconut to start a fire. - Luau and Evening Show: No visit to the PCC is complete without attending their famous luau and evening show. The luau offers a delicious traditional Polynesian feast, while the evening show, “Ha: Breath of Life,” is a spectacular performance that combines dance, music, storytelling, and blazing fire knives! Rated as the #1 best tourist attraction. It’s a magical way to end your day at the center.
- Plan for a Full Day: The Polynesian Cultural Center is a full-day experience. There’s so much to see and do, from exploring the villages to enjoying the evening luau and show. Arriving early ensures you can take in everything the center has to offer.

To get the most out of your visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), we highly recommend purchasing a ticket that includes dinner and their famous Ha: Breath of Life show. This ensures you have a full and immersive experience, enjoying both the cultural exhibits during the day and the spectacular evening entertainment.

- Super Ambassador Package & Ali’i Lu’au Package: These premium packages offer an elevated dinner experience with the Ali’i Lu’au buffet, which includes a live Hawaiian show as you dine. The food is delicious, featuring traditional Hawaiian dishes, and the added live entertainment makes it a truly memorable evening. We chose this package the first time we brought our kids and friends to Hawaii, and it was an amazing experience. The combination of good food and live performances set the tone for an unforgettable visit.

This option includes a simpler buffet-style dinner in the dining room, accompanied by live music. The Ha: Breath of Life show is a must-see, offering a powerful and captivating performance that tells a universal story of life and tradition through Polynesian dance, music, and fire-knife dancing. Including this show in your PCC visit elevates the entire experience, making it well worth the investment.

- Book in Advance: The Polynesian Cultural Center is a popular attraction, so booking your tickets in advance is recommended. And if you book 10 days or more in advanced you get a small discount!
- Plan Your Arrival Time: The Polynesian Cultural Center opens at 12 PM (noon), and we recommend arriving early to fully explore the different villages and cultural exhibits before dinner. This will give you ample time to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Polynesia. On our first visit to PCC, we made the mistake of grabbing lunch beforehand and didn’t arrive until 2 PM. Unfortunately, this didn’t leave us enough time to experience all the islands and mini shows before dinner. However, if you’re visiting with little kids, you may need to adjust your schedule accordingly, as it can be challenging to fit everything in with young ones in tow.
- Dress Comfortably: You’ll be walking around and participating in various activities, so wear comfortable clothing and footwear.
