Best Time to Visit San Diego with Kids

San Diego is a year-round destination, so the best time to visit depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for!

  • For warm beach days: Visit August through mid-October when the ocean is at its warmest and the sun is shining. The average water temperature is around 67°F, making it comfortable for swimming, especially for kids who don’t mind a little chill.
  • For fewer crowds & better deals: Plan a trip in fall, early spring, or non-holiday winter weeks when hotel rates tend to be lower and theme park lines are shorter.
  • For milder weather: Spring and fall temperatures in San Diego and Carlsbad (home of LEGOLand) usually range between 60-70°F, making it ideal for exploring with little ones.
  • Beware of “May Gray” and “June Gloom”! While San Diego is sunny most of the year, May and June are known for cloudy, overcast mornings that can last through midday. It’s still a great time to visit, just don’t expect clear skies all day.

*Heads up: If you’re not a huge sci-fi or superhero fan, avoid Comic-Con week in July when the city gets extra crowded, and expensive!

We visited in April during spring break and, while the skies were overcast, the cooler temps made it easy to enjoy all the attractions without overheating.

If summer is your only option, don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to keep kids cool, like splashing at LEGOLand’s water park or taking breaks in indoor attractions. No matter when you go, San Diego is packed with family-friendly fun!

Flying with Kids: Keep It Simple & Fun

Flying with kids tips: Keep it simple and fun. Girl wearing PuroQuiet noise-canceling headphones while eating a snack, ready for a family vacation.

Flying with kids doesn’t have to be stressful—it’s all about having the right tricks up your sleeve! Over the years (and many flights later), we’ve learned that traveling with little ones is always a bit of a negotiation—mainly, which (or let’s be honest, how many) toys they can bring!

After plenty of trial and error, we’ve found the sweet spot: toys that provide low-stimulation engagement while also allowing for open-ended play. These kinds of activities keep the kids entertained without overwhelming them—and that makes for a much smoother flight for everyone!

Here are our go-to travel toys that keep our kids entertained without overstimulating them:

Magna-Tiles Micro Travel Set – These are smaller than the normal set but just as fun! Our toddler loves stacking, building, and exploring different shapes.

Crayola Mess-Free Coloring Pages & Markers – Our little artist has been loving these since she was 4, and at 8, she’s still into them. No mess, no stress—just creative fun!

Melissa & Doug Take-Along Magnetic Jigsaw Puzzles – If you have a puzzle-loving toddler, this is a must-have! The magnetic pieces stick to the book, making it perfect for travel without losing any pieces.

And when all else fails, we always have our iPad pre-loaded with games and shows. Pair that with our Puro Sound kid-friendly noise-canceling headphones, and we’re set for a peaceful flight!

And of course, you know your kids best—sometimes just a new toy or activity book related to their current interests can do wonders. We also pack snacks and treats for a special “in-flight” surprise—because let’s be real, a well-timed snack can be a lifesaver at 30,000 feet!
