What Is Elf On The Shelf?
If you’re new to the Elf on the Shelf tradition, you’re in for a treat! This relatively new Christmas tradition has been gaining popularity in recent years and it’s such a fun way to celebrate the holidays with your family. The story behind it is that Santa sends a Scout Elf to homes to spend the month of December with the family, reporting back to him at the North Pole each night to let him know if the children have been good. The next day, the elf can be found in a new spot, or even getting up to some mischief! Some parents like to get super creative with their elf’s antics, while others keep it simple. Whatever approach you take, there’s no right or wrong way to do it – just have fun with it!
What Are The Rules For Elf On The Shelf?
There are just a few things to keep in mind to make sure your elf stays magical.
- First, remind the kiddos that the elf shouldn't be touched, or he will lose his magic.
- Second, the elf won't move or speak when the kids are up - they're taking a rest after a night of scouting.
- And last but not least, let's make sure to be kind and have fun with our elf friend.
Keep in mind that our scout elf will head back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve, so cherish every moment we have with it.
What if I Accidentally Break a Rule?
So, if you accidentally touch the elf, not to worry — there are some easy solutions we’ve seen. One time, we held it in the cold for a minute and it did the trick! But, if you prefer to follow the official Elf on the Shelf website, they suggest picking one of the following remedies:
- Write a note to your elf or Santa apologizing for touching your elf.
- Sprinkle a little cinnamon next to your elf. Cinnamon is like vitamins.
- Sing a Christmas carol with your family
Getting Started
Order your Elf on the Shelf kit – it includes an elf and a copy of the Elf on the Shelf book.
Looking to add a fun little Elf on the Shelf to your home this holiday season, there are some great options out there! You can find them on the Elf on the Shelf website, Amazon, Target, and more. They come in all sorts of varieties too – different genders, skin shades, and more. It’s super easy to pick out the one that would be the perfect addition to your household. Have fun shopping and happy holidays!
Did you know that you can easily customize your elf doll by giving it bending arms and legs? By doing so, you’ll have more flexibility when it comes to creating different scenes and settings. The best part is that it’s super easy to do – I personally took a simple approach that didn’t involve cutting into the elf seams or sewing them back together. Give it a try!
- Get your supplies: Flora Wire (14 - 22 gauge) and a wire cutter.
- Wiggle the wire into the seam of each arm and leg and use your hands to guide the wire through the limbs and the elbow/knee seams.
- Push the hands/feet back to trim the wire so it doesn’t stick out.
- Voila!
